On October 10th, student council representatives and members from grades 4-8 visited the Salvation Army food bank at Mainway and Appleby Line in Burlington. Students helped sort and stock shelves with non-perishable food donations during this one hour visit. They learned that this food bank relies heavily on donations from the public, especially during non-peak times such as spring and summer. It is also staffed by only four paid workers, with the rest of the sorting and stacking being completed by volunteers. Although the warehouse appeared full to the students, it was in fact 3/4 empty! Students learned the valuable lesson that they can make an important difference in their own community by bringing their donations in year round. Students are inspired to further support GAA’s We Scare Hunger food drive all month long. Together we can help make hunger disappear.
